what is a vitreoretinal surgeon
A vitreoretinal surgeon is a medical doctor that diagnoses and treats retinal problems with medicine, laser, and surgery.
Problems that vitreoretinal surgeons see include but are not limited to diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, retinal detachment, retinal tears, macular holes, trauma, complicated cataracts, endophthalmitis, posterior uveitis, intraocular tumors and retinopathy of prematurity.
Vitreoretinal surgeons must complete a 4 year undergraduate degree, medical school, a 5-year ophthalmology residency followed by additional years of fellowship training in retina. Vitreoretinal surgeons are licensed by the Medical Council of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and Provincial licensing authorities. Vitreoretinal Surgeons work with other members of the eye care team including general ophthalmologists, ophthalmology subspecialists, optometrists, family doctors, endocrinologists, neurologists, other medical doctors, technicians, and photographers.
